Cloth Wrapping Ceremony at Phra Prang Temple

(Festival / Traditions, Si Satchanalai , Sukhothai)
The Cloth Wrapping Ceremony at Phra Prang Temple is a cherished annual event that holds deep significance for Buddhists. As part of the ceremony, white and red cloth is purchased by the faithful to be respectfully offered to the temple. The temple, in turn, provides a table for individuals to inscribe their names on the cloth and make offerings by their beliefs. The funds collected from these activities are then dedicated to the temple, reflecting the Thai Buddhist belief that contributing to the wrapping of a high and sacred prang with one’s name-inscribed cloth can bring about prosperity and joy.

Additionally, participants take part in the floating robe offering ceremony (make and off-season offering of robes and other needs to monks), a meaningful act of merit-making where individuals hang banknotes on a specially prepared railing next to the ordination hall. These banknotes remain in place for the entirety of the five-day period, accumulating in length and forming a beautifully interconnected display as more people come to make offerings. Subsequently, the collected money is tallied and presented as a contribution to the temple. These cherished customs are upheld and safeguarded by the residents of Moo 6 Village, Ban Phra Prang, serving as a precious heritage for future generations to embrace.
