Phra Ruang and Spirit of Sukhothai

Drowning Phra Ruang
The story ended with Phra Ruang drawing and disappearing. It was said that after the reign of Sukhothai, one day Phra Ruang felt hot and desired to take a bath at Kaeng Luang in the city of Si Satchanalai. Before taking a bath, he gave his son his royal headgear and said that if he took a bath and did not come back, the son had to rule the city. Then Phra Ruang took a bath and did not come back.

It was said that when morning glory vines were growing in the Kaeng Luang and then spreading along the Yom River to bind around the top of the Stupa of Phra Sri Rattana Mahathat Worra Mahawihan Temple, Phra Ruang would come back again.

Interestingly, the evidence from much ancient literature, such as Chinkan Matinee, was composed the Pali language in Lanna, defined the name of a king of Sukhothai as Utok Chotarat or Utok Chotthatarat, which might be interpreted that a drowning king. However, it is not sure which king was referred to and why he was called by this name. It is possible that the story Phara Ruang was spread or there might be a king drowning and passed away.
