Soap Carving

Si Satchanalai

The tradition of soap carving in wooden boxes featuring northern Thai designs is a cherished souvenir of Tambon Si Satchanalai, obtainable at various locations including Wat Phra Prang and Kaeng Luang Restaurant. Mrs. Phonthip Boonmak, formerly a merchant, transitioned to soap carving in 2007 after recognizing the absence of this souvenir in Tambon Si Satchanalai. The soap carving process involves soaking the soap in water for a week, followed by airing for 3 to 7 days before carving.

Commonly carved shapes encompass roses, lotus flowers, orchids, and carnations, each handcrafted and painted with batik before being placed in boxes for adornment and easy souvenir acquisition. Tools required for carving entail a carving knife, a tool for creating flower pollen, and boxes sourced from Chiang Mai Province. The selling price ranges from 50 baht for a small box to 100 baht for a large box.
