Chetuphon Temple

temple, stone inscription and Phra Khapong Luang
(Sukhothai Historical Park , Sukhothai Old City)
From the royal work “Travel in King Phra Ruang's city" by King Rama VI, who knew the name of the temple from the pathfinder. The name of the temple was named from villagers. However, the name of Wat Chetuphon was discovered in the inscription on the slate bar. It engraved the Buddha image found in this temple. It is concluded that in 2057, Chao Dharmarangsri had been ordained 22 years ago. He built a Buddha image to enshrine for the people to pay respect with the word of 'This stone, we are bringing from “Khao Phra Kaphong Lhuang", the sacred mountain. It corresponds to the source of slate extraction in the mountains that is behind Sukhothai city, which may be “Khao Phra Kaphong Lhuang" in the inscription. These inscriptions indicate that there are temples in the city and are of great importance. What makes Wat Chetuphon great and worth seeing is the wisdom of using the slate, which is one type of metamorphic rock. It has the property of having beautiful color, shiny texture, strong to a certain extent, but can carve the pattern. People in the Sukhothai era often cut it for benefits, such as making inscriptions, toilet panels, and floor tiles. Yet, nowhere has a large slate used to decorate as much as this Wat Chetuphon using slate to cover the floors to make balconies and arches by imitating woodwork with a beautiful carving process.
