Big Temple, the heart of Sukhothai
If we compare the Sukhothai Kingdom in the body, Wat Mahathat is also the heart of this land. In addition, there are also the artistic artifacts that the Sukhothai ancestors created. The pagoda is as dominant as the sky "Lotus-bud topped pagoda" that is the identity of King Phra Ruang’s land. This place is surrounded by various pagodas. There are about 200 pagodas, 10 sanctuaries, 8 mondops, 1 temple hall, and 4 ponds. Regard as this temple is the center of the Sukhothai kingdom that was built with the original concept of Buddhism about the symbolism of religion in the position of the center of the universe.
Even the body of the Sukhothai kingdom is decadent over time, but the Sukhothai living is still well-defined. To visit the Mahathat temple means we can experience the spirit of Sukhothai appearing in bricks, stone, stucco, and sand


6+1 Secret of Wat Mahathat
  • Lotus-bud Pagoda is the authentic Sukhothai art that may be used as a place to enshrine the Buddha's relics.
  • The stucco sculptures are the disciples in a prayer position walking clockwise around 4 sides of the Pagoda.
  • The 2 of Attharassa has a height of 18 cubits flanking the main Pagoda.
  • Khom Dam Din is the origin of the belief of Pha Ruang turning the Khmer soldier to the stone, and the villagers destroyed and sharpen it in the water giving the pregnant women drunk it which help them to deliver their child easily. After finding the spherical-shaped laterite stones, the Fine Arts Department brought them to preserve at the Ramkhamhaeng National Museum.
  • The red lotus pond has lotus buds that never bloom which are the water reflection of the top of the lotus-bud shape of the main Pagoda projecting through the red lotus pond surface. They believed that Phra Ruang has ordered to construct the big pond to benefit the public by having to plant a lotus and set the sacrament which let the water in the pond not dry out, nor let the lotus plant die and let it always be an eternity.
  • When the Pagoda is in the evening sun, Maha That temple would be as beautiful as a painting. When the sun began to set, Maha That temple would be as beautiful as silhouette photos.
  • Another secret that must be followed in the next chapter is the large laterite viharn at Maha That temple that was once enshrined "Phra Sri Sakyamuni", the largest bronze Buddha image in Thailand which has a wide lap around 6 meters and 25 centimeters (3 Wa and 1 Keub). Nowadays, it is enshrined at Suthat Thepwararam Ratchaworamahawihan temple in Bangkok.
