Wat Sra Sri

Hidden pond in the pond
The name of this temple will be translated as "sacred pond". The temple is located on the largest cay of the Sukhothai ancient city (Traphang means "pond") and (Traguan means morning glory.) And on this cay, there is also another pond that was excavated. Some scholars assume that it may be “Traphang Poi Si” as it appeared in the stone inscription of King Ramkhamhaeng said: 'There are Traphang Poi Si in Sukhothai city. The water is pure. When you are drinking the water like you are drinking the water from Mae Khong River in the dry season. So, this construction may be one of the wisdom to filter the water that makes the water is pure.
But the local people have the origin of the name that is more interesting… The name "Sa Si" means "four ponds." In the past, Jarodvithi Thong Road, which cuts directly from Sukhothai and heads to Tak Province is passed through the ancient city of Sukhothai and passed into this temple. Two ponds stacked together became four ponds. After that, they would like to develop the ancient city of Sukhothai as a historical park and declare it as a world heritage. Thus, they need to move Jarodvithi Thong Road to the north became the road that runs along with the Traphang Ta Guan as today. Then, they have to move the road at that time found the Sukhothai Inscription of Wat Sa Si."
