Villagers in the area call this temple "Wat Ta Then Khung Nhung". They told that there is "Ta Then" or the old abbot in this area who likes to bring the cowhide and buffalo hides to stretch and dried in the sun in the Pagoda area for making drums for other temples being the origin of the temple's name from the familiarity of the villagers. In 2499 BE, when the Fine Arts Department took over the restoration, they found the stone inscription stating that this temple was completed in 1947 BE by Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chonnani Si Thammarat Mahadiratana Rachanath Kanlongmae, the Royal mother of Somdej Phra Maha Thamracha Sai Lau Thai, the 8th King of Phra Ruang dynasty by inviting Somdej Phra Maha Thera Sri Kirati Chao Ngao Phutthangkoon Darun Punlok from Kamphaeng Phet, along with a group of monks becoming the director. They named the temple "Wat Sri Phichit Kirati Kalayaram" This is one of the few temples in the ancient city Sukhothai that we can know the original name of its, along with the exact location of the temple.
